What
had to be done?
GridClub today is virtual
world-cum-educational website that was originally created by
the Department for There are more than 100 different
games on the site, all of them linked to the national
curriculum, but all dressed up in a way that doesn't make it
obvious. The key target age group is 7-11 but children
between 5 and 12 will find much to engage them.
However, when the concept was being considered by the
Department for Children, Schools and Families, a major
concern was to ensure internet safety for the children using
the site.

determine their requirements, recognising the importance
of business needs over technical - importantly
ensuring child safety;

defined the procurement strategy and.
designed the contract to reflect the business
requirements and risks to them, based on OGC model
terms;

consulted with the wide-range of
stakeholders to design a multi-disciplinary evaluation
that ensured bids addressed adequately all aspects of
the service;

negotiated and awarded the contract;

handing over the completed contract to
the live-running team.

GridClub is one of the most popular
educational websites in the UK because of its innovative
design and fun approach to learning. The site has
recorded some 40 million game plays in the last 12
months and has won all the key awards for interactive
learning;

GridClub won a BAFTA for the ‘Best
Online Learning Site’ in 2001. GridClub also won a
special BETT award in 2002 for ‘Learning beyond the
Classroom’, an EMMA award for best multi-media learning
in 2003 and an ISPA ward in 2004 for its contribution to
Internet safety for children.
